I read it almost by accident and was strangely haunted by its contents. Part I is essentially about the house and a woman. Part II has a predilection for thoughts on death. There is no plot. It reads like the logging of a series of wide-ranging thoughts on the same subject.

After several readings the text became for me a memory of my mother who loved and cared for her house. She kept her space clean, spare, and comfortable for her family. Quiet and safe.

Some of the sentences prompted visual "short stories." Eventually 91 became selected to become small "books" - each one not more than a couple of pages. Essentially they are Hejduk's words paired with images.

THE HOUSE:

To contain the books a doll house seemed suitable. Finding one that was appropriate was challenging. Just as surprising as finding the essay was finding an unfinished, simple wooden house that was divided in two parts just like the essay. Life on one side and death on the other.

The interior I decorated with wallpaper and visual ideas and words gleaned from the essay. The outside walls are stained and the roof painted. Wooden letters are scattered and glued randomly over the exterior, More words are applied in places appropriate to the text.

A final bonus was the presence of a small, extra room on the first floor, on the death side. It easily housed a project made a year earlier - small books documenting the four homes owned by my parents.

curiosity cabinethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17559760820918483128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4216207783174239818.post-58621938950142455602018-10-19T20:25:00.000-07:002018-10-19T20:25:58.400-07:00HAND STORIES: PLANTING BY MOONLIGHT

Thus, though the sky is changeful, men can predict
The seasons as they change and what they bring:
The time for harvest, the time for planting seeds...

Virgil, The Georgics
translated by David Ferry

Synodic planting depends on the observation of the waxing and waning of the moon to make decisions.
Sowing seeds at the time of the new moon is preferred for leafy plants and flowers. Planting root crops when the moon is going toward darkness.
But this story is about Wanda Miller who during her lifetime worked constantly during the planting/growing season. Since she was busy all day selling plants and produce her only option for planting was to do it after hours and into the night. By moonlight.
St Kevin (Anglicized from Coemgen) of Glendalough is recorded as being born in 498. His death date is listed as 618 which seems an unusually long life.
Legend has it that a white cow appeared at his parents' house every morning and evening to offer milk when he was an infant.

He lived as a hermit surrounded by animals. His living quarters were so small that when he went to pray, palms upward, one of his hands had to stick out of his window. One day a blackbird chose to use his hand as a nest in which to lay her eggs. Kevin let the eggs remain there until the chicks hatched and fledged. He was fed by birds who brought him fruit.

The hand standing in for Kevin is that of Megan Parry who has a great love and knowledge of birds. In the summer she and her husband live very close to nature in New York state where they can hear the birds' songs and can watch their behavior.

This quartet of images is to be repeated side by side / up and down to create wallpaper. The immediate impression is quiet and pleasant, but close observation reveals deadly problems in this peaceful landscape.

The upper left grouping:
The central focus is a European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster) in the act of devouring a bumble bee. The bumble bee is also being eyed by a beewolf (genus Philanthus) and a Conops quadrifasciatus.
Two different, highly predacious, assassin bugs sit to the left and right of the poisonous black hellebore, stalking two herbivorous leaf beetles.
The columbine leaves that interest the leaf beetles have already been attacked by leaf miners, usually the larvae of moths, sawflies (a type of wasp) or flies.

Stationed at the corners of each square are four species of ants ready to go to war.

Upper right grouping:
Attracting 3 house flies to their deaths in a pitfall-trap is the beautiful North American pitcher plant (Genus Sarracenia). Just above are two groups of three seeds from the poisonous, vespertine, moonflower plant (Genus Datura). Flanking the pitcherplant are the leaves of the sweet pea (Laythyrus odoratus)whose seeds are toxic.
Flying over the pitcher plant is a cicada being followed by a Cicada killer - a solitary wasp which will paralyze the cicada then lay eggs on it that will provide food for the larva when it hatches.

Lower right grouping:
A green hummingbird flies over the leaf of the poisonous castor bean plant, right into the waiting arms of a large, carnivorous, praying mantis. The leaves by the wings of the mantis are from the bleeding heart (Dicentra spectabilis), which can cause skin irritations. Sitting on the leaves are lady beetles (Family Coccinellidae) ready to attack three aphids.

Lower left grouping:
A blue warbler (Setophaga caerulescens) from the deep woods of North America somehow has run across a yellow pansy butterfly (Junonia hierta) from the paleotropics. A pair of common green darner dragonflies (Anax junius) are also interested in a butterfly lunch.
Seated in the center of a white opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) is a white crab spider (not an insect) which doesn't spin a web, but grabs its prey when it comes to the flower. In this case, it is a doomed white cabbage butterfly (Pieris rapae).
Around the poppy are the poisonous leaves of the choke cherry (Prunus virginiana) and deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna).

Seasonal migrations are hazardous for the participants but necessary for species that require alternate areas for food and nesting. The triggers for this periodic travel can be the change in hours of daylight, variation in temperature, and the availability of food.
Methods of navigation probably depend on the position of the sun, moon and stars, the earth's magnetic field, landmarks, genetics and maybe even smell.

Cornell's Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Society maintain a website (ebird) where visitors can see beautiful, animated occurrence maps of bird migrations.
Driving to Tucson my son Barrett and I were rerouted to a lonely desert highway south of Roswell NM. Our old Ford Tempo kept overheating and required at least 20 minutes to cool off before it would start again. This is when I learned the real benefit of traveling with a naturalist. It could have been frightening or boring. Instead every stop was fascinating. Even the driest, flattest, most nondescript landscape is filled with wonders - if you have a trained eye.
The concept of Private Lives addresses the issue of staying alive by means of camouflage.
This drawing belongs with the Herbarium section of the Cabinet and refers to the Greek myth about Apollo and Daphne.

Apollo offended Eros who sought revenge by shooting an arrow with a gold tip at Apollo causing him to fall deeply in love with Daphne. A second arrow with a lead tip he shot at Daphne which had the opposite effect, making her hate Apollo.

Daphne had already chosen a path of virginity and a life in the forest. She was an able athlete who out ran Apollo till Eros interfered and caused him to catch up. Daphne called for help to her father, Pensus, a river god. Pensus turned her into a tree.
Apollo, still in love, granted the tree immortality so its leaves always remain green.

To tell this story I have used the image of my friend Julie Caroff's hand. Julie recently retired from practicing law to follow her great loves of botany and geology. I can think of no one more enthusiastic about "woody plants".

In selecting naturalists for my mail art project there is usually something that appeals to me and governs my choice. In this case my initial inspiration came from location. It was startling to find that the ornithologist, Margaret Morse Nice, had lived and done her most famous work in Columbus, Ohio - very near my parents home but on the opposite side of the Olentangy river. Ms. Nice had moved away years before they arrived but it was still amazing to think that my mother and father may have heard the songs of relatives of the Song Sparrows she studied for 8 years. Other ornithologists were dismissive about her choice of species of bird to study as too common, but her intense observation brought to light many new concepts and the study as a whole was the most intensive behavioral observation for a single species at that time.

Ornithology had always been a "man's field" where women were not allowed to participate. Ms. Nice opened that door.

My brother, John Eufinger, scouted out the place where she lived with her husband who worked for Ohio State University, and their four daughters. The house still exists but whatever feeling of grace it had is lost as it is now occupied by cheerful male students who decorate the walls with posters about beer.
The area where she did her research on song sparrows, however, probably remains quite the same as it is on a floodplain where no building can take place.
Termite mounds and the underground nests of leaf cutter ants are long lasting. The structures of social insects may last a season or a few years but most of the nests and habitations of birds and insects are ephemeral. So much labor on their part, carving out spaces in the earth or assembling what is on hand.
For this project 16 bills have been designed for financing the Lives of Birds and Insects. To make it more interesting, denominations on the bills are eccentric and harbor a secret perhaps not immediately recognizable kind of recreational math. The arrangement of the numbers is a magic square. Each number is used once. When columns are added up vertically, horizontally and diagonally they all will be the same total. 34.
The literature of the insects follows the same format as the literature of the birds. All the covers of the books have images of leaves so they can conceal themselves in the shrubs and trees. Rather than have the books removed from their cabinet, a box containing an additional set of copies for interested readers is available.
CLEARWING HORNET MOTH

This book can be viewed starting from either the front cover or the back cover. The first half of the book features the European hornet. If approached from the back, the insect addressed is the hornet's mimic, a clearwing moth. At the center of the book are oscillograms of their voices, which are as similar as the insects' appearance. Their story is a duet.

BEES

Since ancient times, bees are among the most common insects to appear in art, poetry, stories and scientific pursuits. They have had a huge impact on human life because of their activities as pollinators and creators of honey and wax.

The image of the bee was drawn in ink, reproduced, then highlighted with iridescent acrylic. The rose, picked in the garden of Stephanie Ruseckas, was drawn with watercolor and color pencil and reproduced in high quality ink jet using acid free inks and paper.

CRICKET

Crickets appear in early Asian poetry and prose and continue to be housed there as pets in tiny cages. They figure in our myths and legends and their voice is a common part of summer evening songs.

CICADA

The cicada has long been of interest as a symbol of immortality or rebirth. They are a popular decorative image in many cultures.

The decorative papers printed in gold ink suggest the loud, familiar call of the cicada at the end of summer. The image of the insect was drawn in watercolor and color pencil, reproduced in high quality ink jet prints, cut out and collaged into the center of the book.

This library has no shelves. Its contents are hung on strings tied to branches in shrubs and trees where they are made available to the birds and the insects. The books are camouflaged, blending in among the leaves. Inside, their contents tell stories and poems and songs, written in languages yet to be translated by humans. We can guess at the meanings but there is, as yet, no Rosetta stone for them so they remain essentially a private literature.
The food here is terrible,
and the portions are too small.

The diets of both birds and insects are varied and can be remarkably specific. Their preferences have great impact on the ecosystems where they live. Their lives in turn are dependent on the qualities of the land they inhabit.

In my Life series I have made it simpler for them by creating a pantry for their use. The container for this storage unit is a clock case collaged with famous art work depicting birds and insects. I have used other clock cases as temples so this one could also be considered the Temple of Food.

Inside there are bottles and cans, similarly collaged, which contain dried seeds for future dinners or as reserves for times of famine. How do the birds survive in Michigan in the winter when the temperatures are so cold and everything seems covered with ice? They amaze me.

Loosely based on pages from the Lindesfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells, the Game Board for the Life of Birds and Insects project was not designed to be played but rather to look like it could be played. Now that it exists, Korinthia Klein and her 3 game playing children have been working on ideas and rules for actually using it. I believe it is the reverse of how most games have been designed.

St. Cuthbert's Duck (an Eider Duck) resides in the center of the board.
Cuthbert lived in the north of England in the Farne Islands. He was a Prior and eventually a Bishop but his heart was that of an Anchorite. He chose to live on Inner Farne Island which no one before him had successfully inhabited. His close association with, and love for, the waterfowl of the region led him to make laws in 676 protecting the nesting birds. This might well make him the first conservationist.

Soon after Cuthbert's death the monks created the Lindesfarne Gospels in his honor.

The covers of all the books that will hang as "literatura de cordel" in the library of the birds and insects are pochoir prints. The prints of leaves will not blend into the drawing of the owls when they are attached to it, but they will have a relationship by virtue of their subject matter. Leaves are either printed directly on some books while others are cut and pasted on the covers.

Each of the books contains a quote appropriate to the species featured - in human language. The main text is either in musical notations by F. Schuyler Mathews (published in 1904 and still referred to today) or language found in field guides and written in the Roman alphabet.

The inside of the cover is marbleized paper and is a reference to the water of the Olentangy River which flowed by Mrs. Nice's property in Columbus, Ohio. The photograph behind the sparrow was taken of trees where she did her work next to the river. curiosity cabinethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17559760820918483128noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4216207783174239818.post-79407224918356265192015-02-22T10:06:00.000-08:002015-02-22T10:06:02.804-08:00THE LIFE OF BIRDS AND INSECTS: LITERATURE

The owl, a symbol of wisdom and erudition, is featured as a bird (a Barred Owl) and as a butterfly in a drawing to be installed inside a wall cabinet / library. It will be obscured in its final state by books attached to the drawing. There will be five books "written" by different species of birds and five books written by different species of insects. The text will, indeed, be in their own languages.

Viewers will be able to open the doors of the cabinet and remove the books for reading. The concept is based on "literatura de cordel," a tradition in northeastern Brazil where books of poetry, songs and stories are hung on strings for sale in marketplaces and at festivals. These books, with original woodcut covers, are affordable and popular. They follow a long tradition of chapbook and pamphlet printing in the 18th and 19th centuries.

At the same time that I was pondering designing four dinner plates for the Birds and Insects project, I was also reading Virgil's Georgics as research for a book dealing with the observation of bees. The Georgics is divided into four chapters. It became clear that the two projects could be combined.

Reading the Georgics was a wonderful adventure. It included forming a very small reading group with another avid reader/artist, Ruth Bardenstein, and searching for a translation which suited us. After many attempts we settled on the recent, remarkable translation by the poet David Ferry.

Each of the four books is devoted to a different aspect of agriculture and explores its glories and its terrors. In the first book Virgil looks at seeds and planting, weather and celestial indicators, - how beautiful as well as how fickle the world is. Everything worked so hard to attain can be ruined in a minute. In the second book he speaks of trees and vines with emphasis on grapes and wine. The third book is the most alarming with its love of livestock and animals in general, followed by the horrors of plagues that kill them and ruin the lives of the people who depend on them. The final book deals with the lives of bees and the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, overlapping with the story of Aristaeus

and the eventual discovery of bugonia, an ancient belief in the creation of bees in rotting animal flesh.

In each book the dark side includes a snake.

Using other reference material that clarified actual species of birds and plants, I selected images that were specific to the books. The project was not an attempt to illustrate the Georgics; rather it was used as inspiration for the images. On each plate there is a snake which in three cases is headless and looks like a ribbon so it would be less frightening to the diner.

Words spoke to you, gave up their secrets; at that moment, whole universes opened. You became, irrevocably, a reader.
Owls, linked with darkness, were once considered frightening - serving in myths as guardians of the underworld. They were believed to have the gift of prophecy. Supposedly the hooting of an owl predicted the death of Julius Caesar.

Alternately, they can be cast in the more appealing role of representing intelligence and learning.

In this drawing the Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula) represents wisdom. It rests in the night sky behind a heap of books that deal with birds and insects. Although they are not identified by titles they are all actually books from my library. Among the volumes is the field guide to Damselflies of Texas, written by John Abbott of UT Austin and illustrated by Barrett Klein. One of my artist's books, a collaboration with Bill Harris, appears in the upper left with a stag beetle on the cover.

The remarkable, articulated, silver, praying mantis pin was made by Ricky Boscarino. The ceramic owl came out of a package of Red rose tea and the plastic rooster on wheels was brought to me from India.

Living with the owl is the owl butterfly (genus Caligo) displaying its underwings which imitate the bird so amazingly well. The astral object near the bird's head is the Owl Nebula which resides in the cup of the Big Dipper (Ursa Major). Also depicted is the now obsolete constellation Noctua which was once placed at the end of the tail of the constellation Hydra. Athene noctua is a small owl associated with the goddess Athena. It is known to live on the Acropolis in Athens.

This drawing is the second in the series of the Life of Birds and Insects.
A companion drawing - Theater of Insects. The title is taken from a book published in 1634 - a work generally credited to Thomas Mofet but actually inherited and completed by him. Mofet did not see its publication as that final step came 30 years after his death. In this drawing there is the addition of the Moonflower which is a botanical pretender to the night sky.

The potential for reproducing an image accurately has become impressive. Recently I have gotten digital prints of my drawings that are so close to the original it is a bit frightening.
Whereas I don't intend to go in league with those who sell their digital work in the same arena as original prints such as etchings and woodcuts, I am thrilled to be able to use the process to print posters and illustrate my books.

I used the digital images of the drawing mounted on the SKY cabinet, inside and out, for my most recent artist's book. Each element is paired with a poem or work of prose written specifically for the book. I am grateful to the writers for their generosity in working with me on this project.

The writers involved in order of appearance in the book: Arnold Klein / Night Sky, Bill Harris / Mars, Arno Klein / Hugo Bristol, Sarah Hart / Moon, Henrietta Slote / Herakles, Barrett Klein / Scorpio Rising, Christopher Leland / Sol Invictus - Father's Regret, Korinthia Klein / Saturn, Alison Rogers Napoleon / Conversations with Uranus.

Sol Invictus may have been the final poem by Christopher Leland at the end of his life. He was a fine writer and an inspiring instructor who is deeply missed.

The cover of the book is a combination of paper with white wax dots, rhinestones and beads sewn on, buttons, press on sparkles and touches of glitter glue. The title page paper is metallic marble.
The digital images are printed in acid free inks on acid free paper by Eric Law of Color Ink Studio.
There are so many fascinating people who have contributed to the study of our world who are no longer remembered on a grand scale. That said, when I "discover" someone it often turns out they appear in almost every book in my library - I have just been skimming over them, going on to something that seemed more interesting or currently vital. They lurk, preparing to amaze me.

I found Gilbert White in John K. King's used and rare book store in downtown Detroit. The Natural History of Selborne - never heard of it - but it looked interesting and it was in my price range. It is a charming, quiet, book of observations of nature written by a clergy man who spent his entire life in the countryside he loved. The book was published by his brother in 1789 and has never been out if print since. If you do a search you will find an incredible number of editions. There are enough to make it perhaps the 4th largest number of books in English.

White, an autodidact, is often compared with Jean-Henri Fabre, the great entomologist born in 19th century France. Fabre came from great poverty, rising above all obstacles to write books on insects which are still read today for the quality of their information and their poetic style. He too devoted his entire life to the study of his native territory.

I have begun a mail art project which I hope will arouse interest in some of the people I have been learning about.
The first mailing was posted to unsuspecting recipients and honored the birthday of Gilbert White on July 18, 1720. There is no death date listed - for me he is still alive. I used a bird to represent him as he is known by many for his work with ornithology.
The second mailing is in small book form which includes a short biography and quotes about insects by Fabre. Many of the people who will receive this book are accustomed to finding a "solstice present" in their mail box. It will be the 16th in a series of 6" square books published annually.
My plan is to do mailings during the next couple of years, honoring the birthdays of naturalists whose work I find compelling or eccentric. Some of my favorites will be missing such as Luca Ghini who is stated as having been born in 1490 but the month and day are unknown.

The actual Mail Art is, of course, limited but can be viewed here in virtual form, now and in the future.

After honoring the great astronomers Galileo, Caroline Herschel and Tyco Brahe I stepped back to look and realized that inadvertently I had also honored 3 of the 5 senses - touch, sight and smell. It seemed silly to stop there - ignoring hearing and taste.

A logical selection for HEARING was Ptolomy who worked with the concept of Music of the Spheres first postulated by Pythagorus.

The featured ear belongs to Lee Ptolomy Jackson, an artist and friend. It resides on planet Earth which was then considered the center of the universe. The other planets, the sun and the moon were each embedded in in their own sphere made of ether and rotating around the earth. The layers were: Earth, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and then the firmament of stars and beyond that the crystalline Heaven.

Ptolemy wrote an influential book called Harmonics that dealt with music theory and mathematical proportions. He believed the same concept of harmonics was present in all things including the movements and relationships of the planets. It is unclear as to whether this included actual sound or was simply mathematical theory.

TASTE was the greatest challenge to add to the sky. I could not determine an astronomer who qualified to represent this sense. Instead it falls to the 17th century French Benedictine monk Dom Perignon and a fictitious but incredibly appealing quote attributed to him when he discovered champagne.

"Come quickly! I am drinking the stars."

Unfortunately he also did not invent the beverage. That may have been an English man. It is another charming falsehood. I will replace this drawing with something more credible should a tasty astronomer be located.

Yet just as the day has two halves, one governed by the sun and the other by the moon, so there are many people of the day and who busy themselves with daytime deeds, whilst others are children of the night, their minds consumed by nocturnal notions; but yet there are some in whom the two merge like the rising of the sun and the moon in the day.

As companions to the night images of Arno and Barrett's portraits there are the two drawings that represent day and night - the sun flower with the golden host of butterflies and the moonflower with its ghostly butterflies and moths. I have done a series of drawings using the idea of butterflies and moths camouflaged in a night sky - their markings helping them to pretend they are stars, galaxies, explosions.

Paplionidae Paplio paris is perhaps my favorite butterfly. It is a beautiful name for a radiant creature. This is the most recent and may be the last in this series. Drawing dots can be addictive and also exhausting. If there is one more it might be only black and white butterflies and moths with perhaps more color in the sky.

ARNO & BARRETT @ NIGHT: Identical twins are similar in profound ways while remaining unique in all respects. In these two portraits Arno and Barrett are surrounded by the energy of the heavens filled with many specimens of amazing insects. Everything is in equal measure. Find a beetle from the family Cerambycidae in one drawing and you will eventually find another of a different species in the other. The stories balance one another - two parts of one puzzle.
